Honduran army admits theft of grenade launchers

(EFE).- The Honduran armed forces acknowledged Wednesday that 22 RPG-7 grenade launchers were stolen from an armory in 2010.

By itself, the launcher "does not represent a lethal danger," the military said in a statement, explaining that the weapon is not usable without a sight and a warhead.

Science takes 2 Hispanic sisters to White House

Washington, Feb 8 (EFE).- Two Hispanic sisters from Presidio, Texas, have had their efforts and their inventiveness at designing rockets recognized by being invited to participate in the White House Science Fair, which is sponsored by President Barack Obama.

Janet and Ana Karen Nieto are following in the footsteps of older brother Hilario by deciding to devote their efforts to science, thus responding to the great obsession their parents have had ever since they immigrated to the United States from Mexico, namely that their children study hard to get ahead.

Mexico's wind energy sector experiencing rapid growth

Mexico City, Feb 8 (EFE).- Mexico's wind power sector is playing an expanding role in the global development of that renewable energy source, having just achieved the milestone of 1,000 megawatts of installed generating capacity, a sector leader said Wednesday.

The president of the Mexican Wind Energy Association, or AMDEE, Leopoldo Rodriguez, told Efe in an interview that that figure is significant because it represents 2 percent of the country's total power generating capacity.

Death toll from Dominican Republic shipwreck tops 40

Santo Domingo, Feb 8 (EFE).- The death toll from the sinking over the weekend of a small boat carrying migrants from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico has risen to 43, with the search for the missing continuing, a navy commander told Efe Wednesday.

"I have 18 bodies on land," navy eastern region commander Capt. Hector Ramon Mendez said by telephone.
