Teeth are inevitable. It truly is an exciting moment when your young child sprouts a first tooth. Perhaps he or she has already had a visit or two from the Tooth Fairy. At some point all parents wonder when it is appropriate for their child to visit the dentist. The answer is; as early as possible.
You are familiar with the process and have seen dental tools and have benefitted from the procedures. Even if your child already knows about the importance of brushing and flossing, it is never too early to introduce him or her to the place where the friendly dental team of experts works hard, to make sure everyone has healthy teeth and a great smile. Dr. Cam Crawford of Maple Leaf Dentistry says, “The first visit should be a positive experience. We want the child to become accustomed to the practice and familiar with all of the sounds, smells, lights and goings on of a dentist’s office.” Dr. Crawford suggests that the initial examination should be between 2 and 3 years old when a review of home care oral hygiene techniques will be conducted. The dentist may detect early signs of tooth decay or bottle tooth decay and review any habits that may affect teeth in the long term such as thumb sucking, lip biting, teeth clenching, or extended use of a pacifier. An application of fluoride and a polishing may be done when appropriate. Before your trip, read a picture book with your child about the people in a dentist’s office such as the dentist, the hygienist and the receptionist. Above all, “Before attending, be very positive and do not discuss your past dental experiences,” says Dr. Crawford. It also helps that Maple Leaf Dentistry has a treasure chest of toys in their office that is sure to put a smile on the face of any little kid.
